Abstract :
Schwannoma is a tumor originating in Schwann's
cells of myelinated nerves. The occurrence of the
tumor in the oral cavity is relatively rare. We
experienced a case of schwannoma of the tongue. The
patient was a 16 year-old man who visited our hospital
for treatment of dental caries on November 2, 1991. He
had been aware of the presence of the lesion for
several years without treatment. Intraoral examination
revealed a well-demarcated mass of 25mm in diameter on
the right side of the tongue. On palpation, it was
elastic, non-tender and movable. The clinical
diagnosis was a tumor of the tongue. It was removed
with the patient under general anesthesia on December
17, 1991. Four years and 7 months later, there was no
sign of recurrence of the lesion.
Microscopically, the tumor consisted of a solid
mass of tissue with palisading of nuclei of tumor
cells. The pathological diagnosis was Schwannoma
(Antoni type A).
